Nutrition and Hydration for Canicross Dogs
Proper nutrition and hydration are essential for your canicross dog performance and health.
Feeding Before Exercise
Feed your dog 2-3 hours before exercise to reduce the risk of bloat (GDV). A light meal of easily digestible food is best before racing.
Hydration
Dogs should have access to water before and after exercise. During runs longer than 20 minutes, carry water and offer it every 15-20 minutes.
Post-Exercise Nutrition
Within 30 minutes of finishing, offer water and a small meal or treat. This is when muscles are most receptive to recovery nutrition.
Signs of Dehydration
Weight Management
Monitor your dog weight regularly. A racing dog should be lean but not underweight. Adjust food intake based on training load.
